ADN arose in 2008 when the El Tiempo publishing house, controlled at that time by Planeta Group, adopted the idea of a free newspaper in the main cities. It circulates in the four largest: Bogotá, Cali, Medellín and Barranquilla. It was the first free newspaper to be distributed in Colombia, from Monday to Saturday. Its source of income is advertising sales. It was based on similar models in Spain, where Grupo Planeta has similar products.

The project was headed by Fernando Millán, who is the current Director of the newspaper. The first edition of DNA was launched in September 2008 following an aggressive publicity campaign. It has approximately 700 distribution points in the four cities.

It is owned by the El Tiempo CEET S.A. Publishing house and is one of company’s most profitable media. All four editions of Diario ADN are highly readable and is the second most read newspaper in the country.
