The Owners

The fundamental right of Freedom of expression can be affected when opinions can’t be freely expressed at all – but also already when freedom of information is contingent or biased. The existence of pressure and/or political, economic and social constraints can infringe the effective realization of the fundamental right of expression and allow the violation of other human rights.

Accordingly, it is important to demonstrate that media owners can affect the selection, creation, and framing of media editorial content—for example, by determining the target audience and editorial slant. They may also exert influence by imparting a political message, by attracting particular advertisers, or by promoting other businesses. The vertical integration of the businesses and industries of the large media proprietors (for example, in distribution networks) can also threaten diversity of opinion and freedom of information.

In order to contribute to the understanding of the behavior of this sector in Colombia, MOM researched the ten most important media groups and fifteen individuals or families who own the companies which control these groups. We investigated who the owners are, how many media outlets they own, in which others business sectors they operate, and which associated interests they have.
